Why Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer?

Vine weevils are beetles that attack a wide range of plants, both indoors and outdoors, but are especially damaging to plants grown in containers. They are one of the most widespread, common, and devastating garden pests.

Over summer and early-autumn the larvae feed on roots, causing plants to wilt and die, and if they survive, the adult weevils will then eat plant leaves during spring, resulting in irregular-shaped notches on the leaves.

What is Nemasys® Biological Vine Weevil Killer?

Nemasys® Biological Vine Weevil Killer is a safe and effective way to deal with a vine weevil infestation. It contains beneficial nematodes (naturally occurring microscopic worm-like organisms) which seek out and kill vine weevil larvae or pupae.

The nematodes attack the larvae and pupae by entering natural body openings, releasing bacteria that stop the larvae from feeding, which quickly and safely kill it. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead larvae or pupae and release a new generation of hungry nematodes, which disperse and search for further prey, protecting the area for up to six weeks.

Application

  • Apply when larvae are present; the product is more effective on young larvae (typically occurring late summer or early autumn)
  • Ensure the soil or the growing medium of potted plants is thoroughly moist and is above 5C
  • Use immediately on receipt of packs or refrigerate at 5C (do not freeze); use within expiry date (see inner sleeve of pack)
  • Avoid application in direct sunlight; nematodes are uv-sensitive, so apply on a dull day or in the evening
  • Use the entire pack and do not store stock solution or diluted product
  • Make a stock solution as directed on the label, making a paste in the first instance and then adding remainder of the water, to avoid lumps forming; this solution should be mixed thoroughly to ensure nematodes are well dispersed and kept agitated
  • Dilute stock solution in a watering can as detailed on label
  • Ensure watering can is fitted with a coarse rose (pores >1.4 mm in diameter)
  • Water after application (but avoid run-off from pots) and keep soil or growing medium moist for at least two weeks
